Description
DETAILS:Original concert program issued by the Southern Defence Committee [Nancye Handy ed.] for a concert held to benefit the people of Birmingham, Alabama during the height of the civil rights movement. Circa 1962. The concert featured some of the top jazz musicians of the time including Sonny Rollins, Ahmad Jamal, Carmen Mcrae, Vince Guaraldi among others. Along with a photograph of the performing artists the program has a short statement from them about how they feel about the events in Birmingham. There is also a newspaper review of the concert which has been attached to the first inside page. The program also has a dedication page to the people of Birmingham. Though there are references to this concert in several library collections and books on the civil rights movement, this is the only program of the show that is known to still exist. Rare.
