ABINGDON POTTERY (ABINGDON IL 1934-50) REFRIGERATOR BOX # RE3

Description

Along with art pottery made 1934-51, Abingdon Pottery made some utilitarian kitchenware.  This included pieces they advertised as "Hot-Cold Refrigerator Sets" that were made only in 1940.  8 shapes were made, all with lids, & they were available in white with a blue lid or yellow with a black lid.  The 8 shapes had mold numbers RE1 thru RE8.
Abingdon sold these refrigerator sets directly to the public & to companies who sold them with their kitchen products.  For example, a June 1940s ad said that everyone who purchased a 6.6 cu ft Gale Deluxe Refrigerator (made in Galesburg IL & sold for 9.95) from the  Farmers Supply Store in Augusta IL received a hot/cold set designed to match the refrigerator interior.  While appliance sizes & prices have certainly changed since 1940, these refrigerator dishes are timeless & make great display pieces.
This sturdy 4-1/4 inch square refrigerator box is shape #RE 3 in white with blue lid.  It is about 3 inches tall & has a tapered ribbed decorative bottom edge.  The lid fits into the top rim of the bottom & sits about 1/2 inch above the bottom.  It has an indentation with handle & some decorative v-shaped lines extending to the ends.  These are somewhat hard to find with the lid intact, as it is not the easiest handle to grasp.
The bottom of this piece is marked only with the impressed RE3.  I have several of the refrigerator set pieces & some are marked & some are not.  (Note:  I will be listing several more of the white & blue RE pieces over the summer.)
The box & lid are both in very good vintage condition - no chips, hairlines, or crazing - but there is a small discoloration in the middle of one side at the bottom of the white box as shown in the first photo.
